Show that $x = - c$ , $y = b^{2} / a$ lies on the ellipse $x^{2} / a^{2} + y^{2} / b^{2} = 1$ . Thus $y$ is the height 1/ $C$ above the sun in Figure 12.10. The distance from the sun to the center has $c^{2} = a^{2} - b^{2}$ .
