The distances $a$ and $c$ on the ellipse give the constants in $r = 1/ (C - D cos θ)$ . Substitute $θ = 0$ and $θ = π$ as in Figure 12.10 to find $D = c / (a^{2} - c^{2})$ and $C = a / (a^{2} - c^{2}) = a / b^{2}$ .
